Moyo, Khupe, Biti, Chamisa re-elected at the MDC congress

BULAWAYO – Lovemore Moyo has retained the post of National chairman defeating challenger Lucia Matibenga, and Nelson Chamisa is the party's new Organising Secretary, Douglas Mowonzora is the new party Spokesman, while Finance Minister Tendai Biti has also retained his position, The Zimbabwe Mail can reveal.

Moyo who is also Speaker of the Parliament of Zimbabwe has been supporting calls for tribal balance arguing that most aspiring Ndebele politicians were being excluded on tribal grounds.

Thokozane Khupe also won her position as MDC-vice president, while Tendai Biti was also retained as Secretary General.

\r\n

Moyo will be deputised by Morgan Komichi, while Tapiwa Mashakada, deputises Biti. Elton Mangoma remains vice-treasurer while Nelson Chamisa is now Organising sectary and is deputised by Bhebhe. A full list will be provided as the day progresses.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai on Sunday urged his supporters to be ready for the country’s next election, as he was formally endorsed to be his party’s presidential candidate against Robert Mugabe at the Movement for Democratic Change party congress in Bulawayo.

\r\n

An election is expected in around a year’s time, although this week a senior minister from President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party suggested it may not come until 2012 or 2013.

\r\n

Mugabe and Tsvangirai share power in uneasy coalition brokered after widespread violence marred the 2008 presidential election.

\r\n

Tsvangirai said he was confident of winning the next election to end the power sharing deal he entered with President Robert Mugabe, adding that his main task would be to revive Zimbabwes economy, at the close of the meeting in Bulawayo.

\r\n

‘I have the vision, commitment and strength to play my part in the struggle, but I will need your support if we are to make the dream of a new Zimbabwe come through,’ Tsvangirai told supporters.

\r\n

‘That vision is to create a 100 billion US dollar economy in the next 30 years. Only an MDC government, which I am proud to lead, has the capacity to redeem this economy from total demise.’

\r\n

‘It is only an MDC government that has capacity and support to grow this economy by about 10 percent every year. If we grow the economy by that margin every year, we will be creating jobs for our young people in the process.’

\r\n

Mugabe initially wanted snap elections held this year, but Tsvangirai has demanded more reforms first.
