Moyo beat his Zanu (PF) rival Simon Khaya Moyo in a tightly contested election on Tuesday night. The election followed the nullification of Moyo’s initial election by the Supreme Court on the grounds that it was not properly done.
MDC also thanked parliamentarians from the smaller MDC party for showing support for Lovemore Moyo after the arrest of several MDC MPs in a move described by critics as designed to whittle down the number of the party’s assured voters.
“The MDC congratulates the people of Zimbabwe through their Members of Parliament from all political parties, the MDCs and Zanu (PF) for their robust determination to defend the gains of the democratic struggle through the retention of Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon Lovemore Moyo,” the MDC said in a congratulatory message issued on Thursday.
“Your unwavering stance to fight off forces of darkness, political corruption and to maintain a permanent footprint to real change by imploring on all progressive forces to speak with a single voice deserves special commendation, acclaim and citation at this crucial stage of the struggle.”
The MDC’s message comes as Zanu (PF) has launched a witch hunt exercise to fish out the two parliamentarians who might have voted for Lovemore Moyo in obvious contempt of the party ideologies.
The win by the MDC candidate was a timely boost for the party which had suffered trying times over the past two weeks when several of its members were subjected to arrests on trumped up charges.
