MDC-USA Elects New Provincial Leadership
STATEMENT – The United States Province of the Zimbabwe Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-USA) successfully held its Provincial elections, March 26, 2011 in West Chester, Ohio, becoming the first of the party’s 15 provinces to hold its five-yearly congress. The main MDC Congress will be held on April 28 in Bulawayo.
In a closely contested election presided over by the MDC National Youth Chairman and Member of Parliament for Nkulumane Hon. Thamsanqa Mahlangu, Mr. Den Moyo of Washington DC District was elected Chairman to succeed Dr. Maxwell Shumba of Cincinnati District who did not seek re-election. Mr. Moyo defeated Mr. Zvidzai Ruzvidzo of Columbus District. Dr. Chris Kwangwari of Florida District was elected vice-chairman and Mr. Andrew Chaponda of Michigan District won the post of Secretary with Mr. Maxwell Mapuranga of Cincinnati District winning the Vice Secretary position.
Rev. Phineas Bonda of Dallas-Ft Worth was elected Treasurer. Mr. Muzi Ncube of Washington DC District was voted Organizing Secretary with Mr. Clever Sangalaza of Massachusetts being voted Vice Organizing Secretary and Mr. Allen Masomere of Michigan is the new Information and Publicity Secretary. Ms. Mary Abdul of Cincinnati was elected Chairperson of the Women’s Assembly and Admonish Deda is the new Youth Chairman.
Addressing delegates to the Congress, Hon. Mahlangu, urged the participating delegates representing the province’s ten districts to re-focus their attention on helping those of their colleagues who were bearing the cross of political persecution back in Zimbabwe. “External Assemblies have a very crucial role to play in our struggle for democracy in Zimbabwe. This can only be achieved if members focus not so much on who is in power but on what you as a province can do to advance the cause for freedom, social justice and dignity for all in Zimbabwe. This means both the leadership and the membership working together and supporting each other and not engaging in petty political bickering,” he warned before and after presiding over the elections.
Hon Mahlangu also told the delegates about the worsening political situation home, which he said was characterized by increased violence against ordinary Zimbabweans as well as trumped up charges against MDC leadership. Ironically Co Home Affairs Minister Theresa Makone was said to be in hiding from the police she is supposed to supervise, the same day we had the elections. He also appealed to delegates to remember the families of party activists like Tonderayi Ndira who was murdered by ZANU-PF thugs ahead of the 2008 presidential re-run. Mahlangu told the congress that the party expected them to do more in terms of developing policy initiatives and providing financial resources needed in the fight against ZANU-PF.
In his acceptance speech the incoming chairman Mr. Den Moyo said that the province was poised for a fresh start. “ I am appealing to all our members to support my executive in order for my team to support the very important work those in MDC leadership are doing in Zimbabwe under very difficult circumstances,” echoing the same theme of political harassment of party members by Hon Mahlangu.
“As a province we will do everything possible to hold those who do not respect the freedoms of all our citizens. Desire for freedom is a universal human right and a government that rules by fear, brutalizing its citizens and or coercion will not last for ever. It will increasingly find it difficult to escape the basis of international law and we will be calling on holding them accountable,” the incoming chairman Moyo said.
Mr. Moyo also thanked the outgoing Chairman for the Province Dr. Maxwell Shumba, whom he described as a “man of his word and a great work ethic.”
