Zimbabwean Mother and baby swept off rocks into the ocean
Johannesburg – A Zimbabwean woman and her one-year-old baby girl were swept away into the ocean at the Steenbras river mouth on Sunday, Cape Town rescue personnel said.
National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the 28-year-old mother was rescued about 150m out to sea in Gordon’s Bay, but her daughter was still missing.
He said the mother was taken to hospital in a “stable condition”.
“The baby remains missing and the police dive unit has been summoned to the scene.”
Shore patrols were still being conducted and the dive unit would evaluate if they
could scuba dive in the area at first light on Monday morning.
The mother and her daughter were staying in Strand and were due to return to Zimbabwe within a few days.
Lambinon said they went to the beach to have a last look at the sea before returning to home.
The incident happened at about 5pm. They were swept off the rocks by two-metre swells.
Meanwhile, in another report, ten people, including at least one Zimbabwean, were killed and seven injured when a minibus collided with a car on the just outside Middelburg, Mpumalanga police said on Sunday.
Media reports understands that one of the victims was a Zimbabwean mother of two who was working in South Africa.
A relative, who is based in Leeds, in the United Kingdom, said they had learnt about the accident Sunday evening.
The minibus was travelling from Emalahleni veered into oncoming traffic after a tyre burst and collided head-on with a car around 06:20 on Sunday, police spokesperson, Leonard Hlathi said.
The accident happened near Rondebosch dam, not far from the Hendrina offramp.
Nine people in the taxi, as well as the driver of the car, were killed.
The minibus caught fire after the accident. Four of the dead were burnt beyond recognition. The other victims were scattered along the road.
The taxi driver and six others were injured and taken to Middelburg provincial hospital.
The taxi was apparently transporting staff to the Alzu 1 Stop petrol on the N4 in Middelburg.
