Matonga’s culpable homicide trial to open next month

He was involved in an accident while travelling along the Harare-Masvingo highway

His two relatives Never Matavata and Chipo Chikoore died in the accident.

Matonga — who is House of Assembly Member for Mhondoro-Ngezi — is being charged with two counts of culpable homicide.

On November 27, the prosecution at Chitungwiza Magistrates’ Court ordered the police to subpoena the witnesses, including Matonga, for trial on January 12 in Court A.

Beatrice police are handling the matter.

Matonga allegedly committed the offence while he was still employed by the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company.

The incident occurred on July 23, 2004 around 6pm when Matonga was driving a Nissan Hardbody double cab vehicle along the Harare- Masvingo Road.

He was in the company of Matavata and Chikoore.

It is the State’s case that when he approached the 70km peg along the highway, he hit a beast which had already been injured by another vehicle.

After hitting the beast, it is the State’s case that Matonga lost control of the vehicle and swerved before ramming into a tree by the side of the road.

Matavata died on the spot while Chikoore was rushed to Harare Hospital where she died on admission.

The bodies were later ferried to Marondera Hospital where a post-mortem was conducted.
