Ngezi Platinum back to winning ways

Ngezi Platinum stretched their lead in the Northern Region Division One soccer league when they beat Mushowani Stars 2-1 in Madziva over the weekend. The victory took the platinum boys’ points tally to 58. Ngezi’s first goal was an own goal by Mushowani’s Arthur Mafulisa, while their second goal came from Terence Dzukamanja.

Both goals came in the second half and for the log leaders it was a sweet victory after losing to Gunners last week. Mushowani were the first to score through Idilisa Kaponda, but they could not maintain their lead as Ngezi snatched a win in Madziva on Saturday. With Gunners taking a break over the weekend after their opponents Blue Swallows asked to be excused from the weekend’s games due to other commitments, and Black Rhinos going down 0-1 to Cargo Carriers, the log leaders are now 16 points ahead of second-placed Gunners.

Gunners retained their position although they did not play after Rhinos lost. Ngezi Platinum coach, Clifton Kadurira, was happy with his team’s performance but said they could have won by a bigger margin had they not missed some of the chances that came their way. “We played very well but they got a goal although we dominated the whole match. We missed some chances in the first half but we came back and dominated the second half resulting in an own goal (by Mushowani).

“I think in our previous game against Gunners we didn’t play badly, we dominated the game but Gunners just attacked once and utilised their chance while we missed ours.

“And, just like last week, yesterday (Saturday) we had the upper hand for most of the game and again we missed some chances but at least we collected three points,” said Kadurira. The platinum boys have so far enjoyed a good season and with nine games to go now, it remains to be seen if they will last the distance and win the sole ticket for promotion into the Premier League.
