Mugabe must answer questions on Sona, MDC demands

Harare – A legislator from the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Morgan Tsvangirai has reportedly demanded that President Robert Mugabe be called back to parliament to explain his state of the nation address (Sona).

Mugabe on Tuesday announced a 10-point economic plan, which included clamping down on corruption and encouraging private sector investment.

\n

Mugabe also indicated in his address that the country was readying itself for a “major economic takeoff”.

\n

“Zimbabwe is already positioning itself for major economic takeoff, in keeping with ZimAsset, which requires massive capital injections and rapid implementation,” Mugabe said. ZimAsset is the ruling Zanu-PF party’s economic blueprint for Zimbabwe. Many critics say it is unworkable.

“Sharp and grounded”

Lawmakers from the MDC, however, questioned Mugabe’s economic policies as the country’s economic hardships continued to grow, with at least 20 000 people having lost their jobs since July.

According to a New Zimbabwe.com report, soon after Mugabe’s speech, MDC legislator Nelson Chamisa demanded that the veteran leader return to parliament and answer questions regarding his Sona.

\n

“Mr Speaker Sir, I raise a point of order that according to the Constitution of Zimbabwe, the president has to come back and answer to questions so that we may move on the same trajectory and be on the same page,” Chamisa was quoted as saying.

\n

This, however, did not go down well with the members of parliament from the ruling Zanu-PF party, who saw it as an attempt by the opposition to embarrass the president.

\n

But Chamisa maintained that the intention was not to embarrass Mugabe “but to amplify his message and help us share his said vision”.

\n

Chamisa’s point of order was noted by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Jacob Mudenda, who ruled that his demands would be considered.

\n

Meanwhile, the Minister of Higher Education and Tertiary Education Jonathan Moyo hailed Mugabe’s speech as “sharp and grounded”.
