“The Union’s National Executive will sit any time in the next few days to consider dates for the Union’s Congress which should be held before the end of the year, " said Takaona in a statement.

The National Executive has already been notified of this. As announced in July, I shall be stepping down as ZUJ President at the Congress.”

However fierce campaigning for Takaona’s post and others have already started with some candidates opening face book accounts denigrating Takaona.

The post of President and secretary general currently being held by Foster Dongozi are considered the two most powerful for a union that commands 98 percent membership among journalists in Zimbabwe.

Takaona is set to sit on the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC).
