The United Nations Secretary General has lauded Africa as a continent continuing to make steady economic, social and political progress.

In a statement issued to mark Africa Day, Ban Ki-Moon has praised the continent’s steady economic growth, creating one of the longest stretches of uninterrupted positive economic expansion in Africa’s history.

\n

But the UN Chief also lamented the dominant story for Africa this year with the Ebola outbreak claiming at least 11000 lives, threatening hard won economic and political achievements in the region.

\n

He highlighted the need for Africa to spread the benefits of its economic progress more broadly and deeply while commending the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and its commitment to gender equality and empowerment of women.

\n

The Secretary General praised Africa’s leadership in female representation in Parliaments.

\n

Moon believes that despite an overall decline in the number of conflicts, too many Africans still experience violent conflict with women and girls bearing the brunt.

\n

He pledged UN support in efforts to entrench a peaceful and prosperous continent.
