Myers, who is American, is a former Executive Vice President of South Western Bell International (SBC, Inc., now AT&T), the largest telecoms operators in the world
Econet said in a statement that Myers has considerable experience in Africa, having led the team that acquired a controlling stake in MTN in the early nineties, before selling it. He then went on to lead a consortium of SBC and Malaysia Telekom that for a while controlled Telkom SA.
Myers is already on the board of Econet Wireless Group (EWG), the parent company of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe.
He is the second non Zimbabwean to join the EWZ board after Peter Campbell, a former partner in a UK accounting firm, who currently heads the company’s audit committee.
Meanwhile, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe chairman Tawanda Nyambirai has announced the retirement of Zachary Wazara and Rugare Chidembo from the company’s board.
They are both former executives of EWG and worked for many years with Econet founder Strive Masiyiwa in developing the group.
Although they had since left as executives to go into their own business, they have however continued to serve on various Econet boards and as consultants.
Nyambirai said they had even continued after their retirement from the Zimbabwean board to serve on other Econet company boards. Chidembo left Econet about 5 years ago, whilst Wazara left executive employment about a year ago.
