Harare – A Zimbabwean man has been sentenced to four months imprisonment for circumcising his two young sons with a nail-cutter, the privately-owned Newsday reported on Wednesday.

Peter Nyachega, 33, circumcised his sons, aged 2 and 4, in Mutasa, eastern Zimbabwe in November 2014, the paper said. He said he had been circumcised in the same way by his father when he was a child and “did not see anything wrong with that”, according to the report.

Magistrate Sekai Chiundura convicted him of physical abuse and said he was a “bad father”.

Chiundura was quoted as saying: “I think these children will be better off without you.”

\n

“You circumcised them with a nail-cutter so you are a bad father. So I am sending you to jail so that you will come back a good father.”

Zimbabwe has been pushing voluntary circumcision for adult males as one way of cutting down on the HIV infection risk. But the uptake has been poor, at around 7% of adult males, according to recent reports.

Health authorities have also trialed an early infant male circumcision programme in a couple of Harare clinics, targeting babies between the ages of 10 and 60 days, again only on the wishes of their parents.
