Popular singer-cum-actress Kudzai Sevenzo will once again put to test her theatrical skills as she directs a play titled “Sueño” that will be presented at the Zimbabwe-Germany Society tomorrow.
It will be her first time to direct a production.
Sevenzo doubles as an actress in the staged reading that also has Rumbidzo Gunduza, Zane Lucas, Francis Nyakuhwa, Musa Saruro, Brighton Ndlovu, Tonde Hakuna and Jerulah Muchiuro as cast.
The production is part of the Almasi Collaborative Arts Organisation’s Mentee director programme for local directors and was founded by international actress Danai Gurira and Patience Tawengwa.
Tavengwa said the upcoming production is an adaptation of Pedro Calderón de la Barca’s play “Life is a Dream”.
“People can look forward to seeing Kudzai Sevenzo’s directorial debut which features a cast of both seasoned and emerging Zimbabwean actors.
“This particular show is a staged reading which is meant to develop dramatic literacy with local artists,” she said.
“The show is set in Spain in 1635 and is about a prince, Segismundo, who has been imprisoned in a tower by his father, King Basilio, following a dire prophecy that the prince would bring disaster to the country and death to the King,” she said.
“Basilio decides to briefly free Segismundo, with the intention of re-imprisoning him if things go awry, persuading him that it was all a dream,” she said.
She added that the reading would give the audience an opportunity to view a period piece of mistaken identity and fighting within a monarchy.
Tavengwa said various theatre developmental programmes where in the pipeline like the Almasi Playwright’s Conference in May which will look into topical issues like the current state of the theatre industry.
Their aim is to professionalise the dramatic arts industry in the country through education, facilitation and collaboration with professional American dramatic artists and artistic institutions.
