UNIVERSITY of Zimbabwe has been shut down following a strike by lecturers for non-payment of February salaries and other benefits.
Students who have long had their own grievances joined the strike as they demonstrated against poor food rations, which they said could not match the tuition fees.
Riot police are manning the university premise at all the entrances as they monitored the situation which is largely peaceful.
Secretary General of the Student Representative Council Valentine Tafadzwa Masaiti said students have their own grievances they want addressed.
“The problem has been going on for a long time and we have on numerous occasions presented our issues to the Vice Chancellor. On average students are paying $1000 per semester, which we are required to pay in full yet we are now getting food rations,” said Masaiti.
