The update on Chigumbura was confirmed by the Zimbabwe team-management in an official statement handed out to the press.

\n

“A MRI scan showed that Chigumbura suffered a third grade tear of his quadriceps muscle — a large muscle group on the front of the thigh,” read the statement.

\n

“Because of the severity of the injury, Chigumbura will not be available for selection for Zimbabwe’s fifth Group B match, which is against Ireland at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart this Saturday.”

\n

The all-rounder sustained the injury as he tripped in an attempt to chase the ball in the outfield, consequently forcing him to leave the field immediately.

\n

However, Chigumbura did return to bat later in the match during Zimbabwe’s chase, scoring a run-a-ball 35 before being the last man dismissed.

\n

Having won just one of their four games in the World Cup thus far, Saturday’s clash against Ireland is a do-or-die battle for Zimbabwe in their bid to push for a quarter-final berth.
