HARARE – MDC-T secretary general Douglas Mwonzora has challenged President Robert Mugabe to live up to his new roles as chief custodian of African statutes on human rights and fair electoral practice by
\nimplementing these in his own backyard.

The 91 year old Zimbabwean leader is current SADC and AU chair which the former Nyanga North MP said were clubs which had well defined rules to be followed.

\n

“He (Mugabe) is now in closer to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights … we hope is closer to the SADC guides for free and fair elections because he is the head who must implement that document,” Mwonzora said at a panel discussion in Harare weekend.

\n

President Mugabe is accused by the country’s opposition of vote theft, presiding over a corrupt government and rights abuses.

\n

Mwonzora said Mugabe was not a suitable candidate to lead international organisations whose member countries have stayed true to their laws and have ensured continued leadership change in their territories.

\n

“How can a person with this background ensure that there are free and fair elections in Chad, free and fair elections in Mali, free and fair elections in Mozambique, free and fair elections in Zanzibar; how can a person who has not had free and fair elections in his own country ensure that. We have a disconnect between the job and the person,” he said.

\n

He added: “A person who is a leader in fraud, theft and subterfuge cannot lead the bloc.”

\n

Mugabe, at an advanced age of 91, is increasingly frail and battling deteriorating health.

\n

Mwonzora said Mugabe must let go as he was now a disservice to the nation.

\n

“The President Mugabe l see now is slow, the President Mugabe l know now is forgetful and can inadvertently denounce his own political party,” Mwonzora said.

\n

“The President Mugabe l see now can be felled by a carpet, so this is a manifestation of the change in the man and l want to say to my friends in Zanu PF that President Mugabe does not grow up side down, accept reality, accept nature, this man is past his time.

\n

“What we are doing now is that we are exporting to Africa, to the region, lethargic leadership, tired leadership, it’s time to rest,” he said.

\n

“If you have a leader of a party that does not hold elections in a congress, how can they ensure elections in the country?

\n

The MDC-T politician vowed that his party would ensure Mugabe does not retain the presidency in the next coming polls 2018 saying he was hiding under the AU and SADC.“How can they ensure elections in the continent, having failed at party level? So we are exporting failure, we are expecting inability, we are exporting lethargy.”

\n

He said: “The good thing for the people of Zimbabwe is that the SADC chairpersonship of our President is ending soon, in August, thank God and also the chairpersonship of the African Union is not a five year term as some people are celebrating

\n

“ … They think President Mugabe will be chair of African Union in 2018; no in 2018 you will be alone and we will be after you.”
