Rick Ross to ‘burn’ Durban hip-hop fest

Slimline Rick Ross, the man Vibe magazine calls “hip-hop’s most well-connected man”, is to headline the second Youth Hip-Hop Festival, in Durban, it was announced yesterday.

The US rapper, who has performed in this country before, is to lead an as-yet unnamed line-up of stars at Moses Mabhida Stadium on May 2.

\n

Promoter Richie R Concepts has promised to go a step further than the inaugural festival and expects more than 15000 people at the stadium, compared to just over a third of that number last year.

\n

But the Grammy-winning star is a shadow of his formerly obese self these days, thanks to his “RossFit” regimen (a play on CrossFit, a “core strength” and conditioning training programme).

\n

The Youth Hip-Hop Festival, as its name suggests, targets young people and encourages them to “do right”.

\n

Durban mayor James Nxumalo said he hoped the festival would educate and empower the city’s young people “to always make the right decision, even if nobody [older] is watching”.

\n

“We look forward to an even bigger festival this year with the inclusion of [Ross],” he said.

Ross is also promoting his latest album, Hood Billionaire.
