How often should you be texting your partner?

Drawing the line between overdoing it and being present in your partners life can be a tricky one. Relationship experts answer this complex question.

Texting generally lets your significant other know that they’re on your mind. As much as some people aren’t into texting, it’s good for building anticipation to the next time you’re going to see one another, says Shamyra Howard- Blackburn, a clinical psychologist who specializes in sex and relationships.

For married couples

Partners who live together, or are married should be careful of not going overboard with the texting. Nicki Martinez a psychologist supports this as she recommends that on average stay-in couples should text three to five times a day. However, relationship experts agree that in order to get texting right in a relationship the both of you need to be on the same page. As petty as this conversation may sound it’ll help the two of you with knowing what is and what is not acceptable.

Back to the  basics

Author of Love Styles:How to celebrate your differences Tina Tessing states that morning and goodnight texts are mandatory, especially if you’re not living together as a couple. In this case texting is taking place of being present. if you were waking up next to each other every morning the first you would say to your partner is ‘good-morning’ and vice versa in the evening. So, experts affirm that these two texts are the most important in a romantic partnership.

Keep in mind their schedule

Remember, just because you’re currently not to busy doesn’t mean someone else isn’t, so don’t make it a big deal if your man doesn’t respond immediately to your texts. He could be swamped at work or simply not having his phone close by. Bear in mind the type of profession your partner is in. If he cant use his phone during work hours don’t text him, if he’s driving half of the time avoid texting him as this might result badly in his work performance.

Keep it short

Did you have fight the previous night? Texting isn’t the right platform to address serious topic for the following reasons; firstly your message will be long and therefore making it difficult for the other to respond. Secondly, your message might get lost in translation therefore making the issue worse and thirdly, you can never be sure of who’s reading your partners text. No-one wants their fights recorded so keep your arguments away from texts.

Alternate with phone calls

Texting is all good and well however none of you should forget to pick up the phone and make that call. In depth conversations should be limited to phone calls and face to face. That way you get feel and experience your partners true emotions. Relationship coach Sansone Braff declares that phone calls are much more intimate than phone calls than back and fourth texting, make sure you verbally communicate more than you do texting.
