Serial Mozambican thieves jailed

TWO serial Mozambican thieves, who had caused untold suffering in Mutare, were last Friday jailed 30 years and 15 years, respectively, behind bars at the Mutare Magistrates’ Courts for 20 counts of unlawful entry and one robbery case.

The duo, Fransico Bobo Gaba (35) and Joseph Munyarari (36) from Bairo, Mugoriyondo Village, headman Shiku under Chief Dimukwa appeared before magistrate, Tendai Mahwe.

Gaba was facing 17 counts of unlawful entry, while Munyarari was facing three counts of unlawful entry and one robbery case.

Gaba was sentenced to 30 years in jail, while two were suspended on condition that he will not commit a similar offence in five, while another eight years was suspended on condition that he restitutes the complainants, so he will serve an effective 20 years.

Munyarari was sentenced to 15 years, and five were conditionally suspended.

In one of several counts against Gaba, the complainant, Stephen Muzopfa (42) from Mutare.

It is the State’s case that on August 6, 2017, Muzopfa retired to bed without locking his doors and windows.

On the same night, Gaba broke into Muzopfa’s house around 9pm, where he stole various household property including television sets, decoders and sub-woofers.

The complainant woke up and saw Gaba in his house, and the convict dropped some of the property and fled.

The complainant made a police report and on February 18 police received a tip off and arrested Gaba in Mutare for similar offences.

In a robbery case involving Munyarari, the complainant is Noma Chiripasi from Mutare.

According to prosecutor, Fletcher Karombe, on December 30, 2017, the convict broke into the complainant’s house in the presence of Smart Mukome, who recently served a jail term in Mozambique.

While in the house, the thieves were intercepted by the complainant in the passage. The accused then produced a machete and ordered the complainant to sit down, as they ransacked the house.

Munyarari, with the help of Mukome, who is still at large, then stole a plasma television, two cellphones and a laptop and fled.
