FC Platinum await Confederation Cup fate

Chibuku Super Cup champions FC Platinum, who are set to be the country’s sole representative in Caf club competitions next year, will learn the identity of their opponents in the opening round of the Confederation Cup today.

The draw for the Confederation Cup, as well as that of the Caf Champions League, will be held at the contintental football mother body’s headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

Zimbabwe was supposed to have two representatives in this year’s Caf inter-club competitions, but ended up with just one representative – FC Platiunum – after league champions Dynamos declined to compete in the Champions League citing lack of sponsorship.

\n

The 2014 league runners-up ZPC Kariba, who, under normal circumstances, would have taken up Dynamos’ place in the competition, also decided against taking up the offer with the unavailability of funds to undertake the financially taxing continental quest, their major reason.

\n

That left the Norman Mapeza-coached FC Platinum as Zimbabwe’s only flagbearer in next year’s African safari.

The Zvishavane-based side will go into today’s draw alongside fellow southern African teams such as South Africa’s Bidvest Wits and Orlando Pirates, Angolan sides Benfica de Luanda and Petro de Luanda, Zambia’s Power Dynamos, Silver Strikers of Malawi, Ferroviario da Beira of Mozambique and Young Buffaloes of Swaziland.

They will be looking to better their 2012 performance in another continental competition, the Caf Champions League where they were knocked out by Sudan’s Al-Merreikh 2-5 on aggregate.

\n

This year, How Mine were Zimbabwe’s representatives in the Confederation Cup, but were knocked out by Nigeria’s Bayelsa United in the second round, losing the tie 2-3 on aggregate.

Egyptian side, Al Ahly, won this year’s edition of the Confederation Cup against Sewe Sport of Cote d’Ivoire after a two-legged final. Sewe Sport won the first leg in Ivory Coast 2-1 before Al-Ahly won the return leg in Egypt 1-0 to clinch the trophy on the away goals rule and collect the 5 000 winner’s prize.
