Guinea has been in political turmoil since its longtime dictator died nearly a week ago. A military-led group declared a coup hours later and named an interim leader.
Jendayi Frazer, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for African affairs said Sunday that if the 84-year-old Mugabe dies while still in power, the same fate awaits Zimbabwe.
Frazer has been a vocal critic of Mugabe, who has been in power since the country’s 1980 independence.
Earlier this month, she said the U.S. could no longer support a proposed power-sharing deal that would leave Mugabe as president.
