Ditched man ‘bombs’ girlfriend’s house

A Gwanda man allegedly petrol-bombed his girlfriend’s lodgings after she dumped him for another man.

Emmanuel Mathuthu (46) allegedly carried out the arson attack last Tuesday.

His girlfriend, Grace Hlongwane (32) of Spitzkop North Extension was not at home.

According to a source close to the matter, the misunderstanding between the two started when they were at Hlongwane’s place of residence.

“They had a misunderstanding after the woman indicated that she wanted to end the relationship. However, this did not go down well with the boyfriend who turned violent. He picked up stones and smashed six windowpanes at his girlfriend lodgings,” said the source.

Hlongwane sought refuge at a neighbour’s house and Mathuthu went away threatening to return to burn the house down.

“When she was still at the neighbour’s house, Hlongwane was informed that her room was on fire. They came to investigate but did not see anyone. They suspected that Mathuthu was the one who threw a petrol bomb into the house, following up on his earlier threat. The matter was then reported to the police who attended the scene,” the source said.

“The relationship had become sour and Mathuthu was suspecting her of seeing another man. On the day he had come to sort out the issue with her before he turned violent. Mathuthu is married so Hlongwane was his small house,” she said.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident.

“It’s true that a room belonging to the complainant Grace Hlongwane in Spitzkop North Extension was burnt after a misunderstanding with her boyfriend, Emmanuel Mathuthu of Ntuthuko Village under Chief Sibasa,” said Insp Ndebele.

The police are investigating it as a case of attempted murder. – B-Metro
